planting seeds while the world is burning

the world when it's my turn to be an adult

I am in my gardening era. I feel in it deep in my bones. Im slowly expanding my houseplant collection with my recent Snake Plant and Venus Fly Trap purchases and we have an empty garden patch in the backyard that is begging for some healthy vegetation. This all excites and scares me because on the one hand I am literally investing into my future in a healthy, material way that will hopefully benefit for years to come. On the other hand, I am keenly aware of the political and economic state of the world right now and I don’t trust the people in power to not want to push the red button, everywhere, all at once and the world starts burning. My world starts burning and its not far fetched as a possibility because multiple countries have faced brutal bombing strikes over the last few months. The world is a mess and i send my prayers to everyone surviving in warzones, interment camps, job loss, homelessness, or just generally struggling to get to the next day.

With all the disaster in mind, I must count every single one of my blessings, Its easy to fall into despair and hopelessness when bad news oversaturates the good news. Or even feel paralyzed with fear because there is so much happening around the world constantly.Fear is the enemy and we must keep moving forward toward our most idealized future despite the present chaos. When people take the time to assess their own lives and seek to improve it in small incremental ways, we collectively create tidal waves of positive change. To quote MJ, “I’m starting with the man in the mirror”. Change begins in the mind, Choosing different thoughts, Deciding what is in your control and taking action on the thoughts that feel aligned with your best potential and go from there. This is my approach to these treacherous times, To simply be the change i wish to see in this world. That change will be me creating a delicious, pesticide free vegetable garden and planting native wildflowers in the backyard because i can and no one is trying to stop me. These things seem simple and obvious in a caring world, In a caring world I wouldn’t have to worry about toxic chemicals being on or in my food, or the lack of biodiversity in my area, poor air quality, the safety of my community against the threat of data centers, food insecurity, job loss, or the government. However, nowadays planting a seed has become almost a political statement against a system that benefits from illness and that is not only dystopian but extremely sad. This has been my motivation to getting myself together so that i can get this garden together because its an investment for a future that is brighter and more beautiful than today.

Why are we actively creating the apocalypse, when we could be making heaven on earth? The motivations of the people in power behind this apocalyptic world is not a mystery. They are driven by greed, power, and falsehoods of immortality. So we the people, the collective force, must be driven by love, care, and community or we will fall to there schemes of hatred. Plant a seed to honor a future you know will be brighter than today.
